Waterfowl and Wetlands of Long Point Bay and Old Norfolk County

7.0 Wetland Dynamics on the Long Point Bay

7.7 Information gaps

First and foremost, detailed information on current conditions is required before wetland loss can be halted or reversed (Prince et al. 1992). The following specific areas also require increased research and/or long-term monitoring efforts at Long Point.

1/ the rate of incremental wetland loss due to cottage and marina development.

2/ the rate that new channels are being dredged and their influence on wetland dynamics.

3/ levels of herbicide application to control aquatic plants and its influence on ecological functioning.

4/ the influence of increased boating activity on submergent and emergent aquatic plants and on staging waterfowl.

5/ influence of wetland loss on waterfowl populations at Long Point and elsewhere.
