EDUCATION, TRAINING AND PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAMMES

Describe the types of activities related to:

Environmental education and public awareness.

Education and information materials on conservation and environmental topics are produced by Bird Studies Canada, the Canadian Wildlife Service, the Long Point Foundation for Conservation, the Long Point Region Conservation Authority, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, as well as the LPBR and other groups. Most materials relate to the programs of the organizations that produced them.

The Conservation Authority provides programs and facilities for the use of school children and community groups at its Backus Education Centre and Conservation Area. The LPBR has involved public school pupils in some of their activities, including sponsoring a week-long biodiversity monitoring camp each summer.

The LPBR has sponsored public meetings on issues of concern to the local community, including discussion of the varous human-induced stresses that impact on the aquatic ecosystems, shoreline erosion and protection, and the decline of the sports fishery in Long Point Bay.

Training programmes for specialists.

Universities make use of the Long Point area for various field excursions or courses. Local groups, including the LPBR, sometimes assist with these. Bird Studies Canada sponsors a week-long young ornithologists workshop at Long Point for secondary school students from across Canada.

Indicate whether there are facilities for education and training activities, as well as visitors' centres for the public.

The main facilities, including a visitor centre are at the Backus Conservation Education Centre (in the Backus Conservation Area). It has an auditorium which is made available to community groups for public programs, workshops, and meetings relating to natural or cultural heritage and conservation. The Centre also has exhibits relating to local human history and natural history.
